Shakira clarifies that she does not support “any candidate” running for president in Colombia, including those whose campaign was boosted by the use of her likeness. Most recently, an advertising image was circulating on fan accounts and social networks that shows the artist together with the candidates Iván Cepeda and Aida Quilcué.
“The images circulating showing me supporting presidential candidates are fake,” the singer said in a statement, according to Billboard. “I do not support any candidate and have not authorized the use of my image in any campaign.”
The images are the latest attempt to link Shakira – especially with Cepeda. Earlier this year, unfounded reports claimed that the musician and the candidate were closely related. Shakira has not yet made any public statements that could steer her Colombian fans in one direction or the other. “My commitment is to Colombia, its democracy and the right of every Colombian to choose freely,” she said. “I would like these elections to be transparent and in a peaceful environment for all Colombians.”

In the past, Shakira has repeatedly denounced injustice caused by demoralized governments. Last year, she explained that being an immigrant in America under the Trump administration meant living “in constant fear.” “Now, more than ever, we must stick together,” she said at the time. “Now, more than ever, we must raise our voices and make it clear that a country can change its immigration policies – but the treatment of all people must always remain humane.”
Shakira moved to the United States from Colombia when she was 19. She later lived in Barcelona before settling in Miami after her 11-year relationship with Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué ended.
In February, Shakira performed four sold-out concerts in Colombia as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. The tour continues this weekend in Miami Gardens.
