Jan-Lennard Struff has caused an upset at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round of this prestigious Grand Slam tournament for the first time. The German player triumphed over former world number one Daniil Medvedev with a score of 7:6 (7:4), 7:6 (7:5), 7:5, overcoming the Russian adversary whom he had lost to in the third round at the same venue two years ago.

This victory marks Struff’s second win in ten professional encounters against the 2021 US Open champion. His last victory over Medvedev came five years ago at his home tournament in Halle/Westfalen. Notably, this was Struff’s first win at Wimbledon against a player ranked in the top ten. In the upcoming round, the seasoned 36-year-old will face either American Tommy Paul or Hubert Hurkacz from Poland.

This year, Struff has reached the third round at Wimbledon for the fifth time. Following his previous defeat against Medvedev in 2024, he fell to Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz last year, who is absent from this year’s tournament due to injury. With this achievement, Struff becomes the 20th German player to reach the men’s singles fourth round at Wimbledon since the Open Era began.

Struff Overcomes Multiple Deficits

Just a day after his stunning victory against American Brandon Nakashima, where Struff hit an impressive 45 aces, he returned to Court 3 to face Medvedev. The match was filled with tension as Struff fought back from several tough spots, clawing his way back from behind in several sets. He remained composed during crucial moments, effectively challenging the favored Medvedev. Upon his victory, Struff expressed his feelings: “It’s my first time in the fourth round of Wimbledon; I’m very happy and proud. It’s incredible. Tennis can be a tough sport, but the most important thing is that you never give up.”

As Struff makes his mark, other notable players are also vying for a spot in the round of 16. On Saturday, French Open champion Alexander Zverev is set to play against Marcos Giron from the United States, aiming to add to the excitement of this year’s Wimbledon.
