Julian Nagelsmann is no longer the national coach. (Federico Gambarini / dpa)
Nagelsmann stated in the DFB communication that the national team deserved a fresh start following such a significant disappointment. Nevertheless, he admitted that the decision to step back was not easy for him. After the loss to Paraguay in the Round of 16, Nagelsmann had ruled out resignation. The DFB did not disclose the details about the severance package, but media reports suggested it was worth several million euros.

Klopp Expresses Willingness to Take Charge

The DFB also confirmed that they would seek discussions with Jürgen Klopp. The former coach of Mainz, Dortmund, and Liverpool has reportedly indicated his willingness to consider taking over the position.

In light of the national team’s early exit from the World Cup, a crisis meeting was held among DFB leaders the previous day. This was followed by a board consultation and a general assembly of the football association.

Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick in September 2023. After the home Euro 2024 and the exit in the quarter-finals, he and the DFB had extended their cooperation until Euro 2028.

Rettig Also Departing from the DFB

Additionally, sports director Andreas Rettig is leaving the German Football Association. His contract is set to expire at the end of the year. The association did not provide any information regarding the future of sports director Rudi Völler, who was Nagelsmann’s main contact point at the association.

This news was broadcast on 03.07.2026 on Deutschlandfunk.
