Seven goals: KSC wins wild game at HSV

As of: January 28, 2024 8:23 p.m

Deep sleep in the opening minutes and later knockout: Hamburger SV stumbled in the promotion race of the 2nd league with serious consequences.

Coach Tim Walter’s team lost 3:4 (2:2) to Karlsruher SC in a wild exchange of blows on the 19th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga and once again lacked the sovereignty of a top team.

Igor Matanović (3rd minute/5th) gave the guests an early lead with a double strike on Sunday (January 28th, 2024), Bakery Jatta (33rd) and László Bénes (35th) equalized for HSV before the break.

KSC also came out of the locker room better in the second half and scored through Budu Zivzivadze (46th) to make it 3-2. Although Robert Glatzel was able to equalize again for the Hanseatic League (62′), KSC had the better end after Marvin Wanitzek’s 4-3 win (81′).

Karlsruhe’s coach Christian Eichner was not at all surprised at the way the crazy game went at the Sportschau microphone: “I think it was the wild game that was expected. Unfortunately, we are participants in these games far too often. Nevertheless, it did everything that the game between Hamburg and Karlsruhe promised.”

HSV is only fourth, Karlsruhe in eighth place

For HSV, the defeat is a setback in the fight for promotion, as the team slipped to fourth place in the table. The gap to leaders FC St. Pauli is five points. The KSC, on the other hand, improved to eighth place.

HSV coach Tim Walter was a bit at a loss when told Sportschau: “How can you come back like that and then give it away again? And actually you don’t know why, that’s the issue. Then we play ourselves into a frenzy, come back so well and can take the lead before half-time. And then we come back out and the same thing happens again.”

HSV responds to Karlsruhe’s lead

In the packed Volksparkstadion, things got down to business right from the start, and there was no scanning. Karlsruhe started forward more determinedly. Matanovic scored twice within a short space of time. The game was accompanied by renewed protests against the German Football League’s investor plans. In the twelfth minute, tennis balls flew onto the field from Hamburg’s North Curve. The game was briefly interrupted.

With the support of the audience, HSV then found its way into the game and responded. Jatta scored after an assist from Benes, who shortly afterwards made it 2-2 after a counterattack.

2:3, 3:3, 3:4

Immediately after the break, Karlsruhe’s Siwziwadze prevailed against the weak central defenders Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos and gave KSC the lead again. Glatzel scored to equalize again. When Hamburg was pushing for victory, Wanitzek struck and brought the guests success.
