Selfie carnival poster unveiled: ‘Long out at corona’ | 1Limburg

After a one-year break, Tuesday the sixteenth and thus traditional carnival poster was unveiled. With the poster, artist Paul Kusters gives the opportunity to literally stick out the tongue at the corona virus.

The design by 55-year-old Kusters from Geleen was unveiled on Tuesday afternoon in the Gouvernement in Maastricht.

The poster has a different approach than its predecessors. The center of the poster can be pressed out as a heart shape, creating a photo frame for selfies. “You can stick out your tongue at the corona virus,” explains Kusters. During the presentation of the painted artwork, he indicated that he wanted to make it childlike and bold, with bright colours.

Deputy Geert Gabriëls, who unveiled the poster together with Kusters, calls the work ‘super good’. “It’s a poster as is fixed: nonsense.” Kusters indicates that the poster can also be framed by collectors, where he recommends a white background.

The free poster has been published since 2006 by the Province of Limburg, De Limburger and Sjeng Kraft Kompenei. Every year the now traditional printed matter is made by a different artist.

As in previous years, 75,000 copies will also be released this year. From Wednesday 9 February the poster can be picked up for free at 48 Limburgse locations

Paul Kusters
Kusters, who is best known for his cartoons, has been publishing his work in several newspapers since the 1990s. He draws the cartoon Toos & Henk six times a week, which appears in various newspapers. He lives and works in Maastricht and Meerssen.

The artist tells L1 that he has known for a year and a half that this job was assigned to him. “If it really has to be a secret, you can confide in me.”

Coronavirus
In 2021 there was no poster from the initiators due to the corona virus. They called it inappropriate at the time because of the circumstances. That year, artist Leo Kornips from Echt released an alternative to the annual Vastelaoves poster, which turned out to be very popular. However, the initiators of the ‘original’ poster were not happy about it.
