FC Schalke 04 and technical director André Hechelmann are going their separate ways with immediate effect. The 39-year-old moved to the Royal Blues in the summer of 2021 as chief scout from 1. FSV Mainz 05, where he then took over the position of sports director and had to hand it over to Marc Wilmots at the beginning of January. Hechelmann’s tasks will be divided within the club until further notice.
“After good discussions characterized by respect and appreciation, we came to the decision to end our shared path,” explained CEO Matthias Tillmann. The club leadership sees the decision as an opportunity to consistently continue the restructuring of the sporting area that has begun. “We had already considered this scenario in our deliberations at the end of last year, so we were able to quickly start the process of finding a successor. Our position as the board is clear: We will definitely bring in another person who will help us achieve our goals with their expertise and conviction.”

Hechelmann added: “It is with pride and joy that I have been able to work for FC Schalke 04 with great passion and commitment to this day. In our conversations with new players and staff over the past two and a half years, we have always tried to convey that the club must always be the focus and has priority – no matter what situation or position the individual finds themselves in. That’s why I supported the decision about my future today in this spirit. I can not only wish the club and above all the team, which has shown its class again and again – as recently against FC St. Pauli – that they stay in the league, but I am firmly convinced of it. Good luck – and a special thank you to our passionate fans.”
