The Italian player Salvatore caruso, number 150 of the ATP, fulfilled the forecasts by winning in two hours and eleven minutes by 7-5 and 7-6 to the Argentine Juan Pablo Ficovich, number 236 of the ATP, in the qualifying round of the Australian Open. With this triumph, Caruso manages to add new points to his ranking to participate in the Australian Open.

The tournament Melbourne (Australian Open Indiv. Masc.) has a preliminary access phase where players with the lowest rankings have to obtain the highest possible points in order to qualify and participate in the official tournament. Specifically, a total of 128 players participate in this phase of the competition. In addition, it takes place from January 9 to 30 on an outdoor hard court.
