Vienna (dpa-AfX)-After the attack on Iran’s nuclear systems, the international nuclear energy authority (IAEA) is concerned about the whereabouts of the whereabouts of the almost nuclear-weapon-compatible uranium in the Islamic Republic. In a new report, IAEA boss Rafael Grossi demanded access to the material.
After the Israeli and US attacks in June, IAEA inspectors left Iran, and Tehran suspended the cooperation with the nuclear authority in Vienna. At the end of August, an IAEA team was able to travel to Iran for the first time. However, the experts were only allowed to inspect a nuclear power plant, but not the more than 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.
“Reason for serious concern”
These supplies would “cause serious concern,” it said in the non-public report, which is available to the German Press Agency. Grossi pointed out that Iran was the only state without nuclear weapons that had such material.
In the past, the IAEA had set itself the goal of being able to discover a possible abusive use of this uranium for military purposes within one month. Now two and a half months have passed since the latest inspection, Grossi stated in his report. A review is therefore “overdue”.
According to events such as attacks or earthquakes, Iran would have to present a special report on the status of his nuclear material, according to an agreement with the IAEA, as a high -ranking diplomat said. On this basis, the IAEA can then carry out inspections. For this purpose, further discussions between representatives of the nuclear authority and Iran are planned in the next few days, the diplomat said.
Iran denies to strive for nuclear weapons. But on Wednesday, dozens of parliamentary members in Tehran demanded a quick exit from the nuclear weapon blocking contract, which prohibits countries without nuclear arsenal to get to nuclear weapons. The background to this advance is the upcoming reintroduction of hard nuclear sanctions./AL/DP/JHA
