What happened before
In September 2023, the Irish artist’s following Facebook comment was unearthed on Facebook: “Puberty blockers are crap, absolutely desolate, Big Pharma is laughing up its sleeve. Little confused children are vulnerable and need to be protected, that’s just true.” Although she was embracing a transphobic ideology, the former Moloko frontwoman asked the online community: “Please don’t call me Terf, please stop using that word against women.” To understand: The abbreviation “TERF” stands for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” in German.
After Murphy received heavy criticism for her statement, the singer appeared remorseful in a detailed statement on X. She apologized that her comment had “hurt a lot of people” and said her concern was “out of love for all of us.” In the same statement, the artist promised to “completely withdraw from this public discussion” regarding the issue.
And now: Róisín Murphy is getting involved in the trans discourse again
On Tuesday, October 21, the singer posted a graphic on She commented on the screenshot, the contents of which come from Tufts University’s Cooperative Election Study, with the words: “This was never real. Still, it is terribly sad. It has wreaked absolute havoc on children, families and society.” The posting and quote can now only be found as secondary sources – Murphy himself has since deleted the X post.
According to Fox News, the graphic is based on a data set from a nationwide survey of the said age group in 2021 and 2024. Jean Twenge, data analyst, told the US news channel that the numbers indicate a “change in attitudes towards transgender people and a worsening of social conditions” rather than an “actual change in identification”.
Murphy previously discussed with users
Before deleting the X-posting, the 52-year-old had replied to several people on the social media platform who gave her various reasons for the decline in trans identification among young people. One X user wrote: “Yes, people are less openly trans when hate speech against transsexuals is promoted by powerful people. What do you mean by that?” Róisín Murphy replied: “I think you mean when dissenting voices have their say.”
The Blessed Madonna also responded to Murphy’s post. The American DJ published a long video on Instagram in which she explained the background to the 2023 incident and expressed sharp criticism of her former friend. “You fooled me before. You were never a queer icon. You’re just some stuffy TERF who knows how to make queer money and show off good outfits,” said The Blessed Madonna.

She captioned the Instagram video with the words: “Fuck off and leave the term transsexual out of your mouth.” Róisín Murphy has not yet responded to this post.
