Frenkie de Jong is now the second captain of the Dutch national team. This became clear on Wednesday when national coach Ronald Koeman took captain Virgil van Dijk off the field halfway through the practice match against Algeria.
De Jong was given the captain’s armband after the break and not substitute Nathan Aké. At the 2024 European Championships in Germany, Aké was the second captain.
De Jong was missing from the European Championships with an injury. Even before De Jong was injured, Koeman indicated that Aké would be his second captain at the European Championship and De Jong his third.
De Jong was substituted in the 69th minute against Algeria. The captaincy then went to Aké.
