After the excitement about his role in the Bundesliga top game between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich (2: 3) in December, the Berliner decided to take a break for the time being. Zwayer was heavily attacked on social media after the game, and later he reported a death threat.

DFB chief referee Lutz Michael Fröhlich said at the end of January that he could not seriously answer the question of whether Zwayer would continue. “I can only tell you that we are working on keeping Felix Zwayer as a referee,” said Fröhlich on Sky TV.
