Although Remi (21) participated in several Dutch Championships, Remi is still a bit awkward on the voltiger. That is not surprising, because full – just like the rings and the horizontal bar – is a part that is only practiced by the gentlemen in gymnastics. “I have to put a little time in this, but that will come,” laughs Remi.
Remi is non-binary and that means that you don’t feel a boy, but no girl either. Remi also likes to be with ‘those’ approached instead of ‘he’ or ‘she’.
Don’t belong
Remi has been getting with the girls since his fourth and participated in several Dutch championships. “In the beginning I thought it was great. I looked up at the girls and thought all those glitter outfits was beautiful. But when I found out a few years ago that I actually didn’t feel any more girl, I got a lot of trouble with it. I look different and I feel the looks that I just don’t belong. I sometimes found that sad. Especially during competitions.”
Last month, Remi heard that from now on he can participate in competitions and training with the gentlemen. “Many people respond positively that I am the first person who makes that step. But many people also say: ‘Nice, but if it had been the other way around, it was unfair. I think that is a difficult remark. As if men are better by the women. It is also about agility, strength and grace. That differs for new parts.
