Refugee helper insults Germans as “white bread”, why?

By Gunnar Schupelius

The dispute between Axel Steier and Hans-Georg Maassen is a lesson in how double standards are used in public, says Gunnar Schupelius.

Behind the “Maassen case” is the “Styria case”. Hans-Georg Maassen was President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and was dismissed in 2018. Now he is to be expelled from the CDU because he made extremist statements.

The reason for the anger of the party leadership is Maassen’s reaction to Axel Steier. He runs the “Mission Lifeline” association and takes in refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean with a ship. Steier tweeted on December 17, 2022 that “at some point” there would be “no more white bread”. By that he meant German citizens with white skin.

How will this happen? He wrote: “The dehomogenization of society is progressing. I support that with my work.” The Senotretter Steier apparently thinks that German society will mix up as a result of the admission of migrants from countries outside of Europe and that at some point there will be no more white Germans.

As a result, Hans-Georg Maaßen gave up and claimed that “the driving political forces” in Germany would promote “eliminatory racism against whites” and were filled with the “burning desire” “that Germany should die”. Steier put this goal into words.

So back to Axel Steier: We wanted to know what he wanted to say with his tweet. But unfortunately he didn’t give us an answer, even though we had sent him the questions in writing.

It’s a shame, because the picture is murky: someone goes to sea to save lives, but then he says he’s really interested in a different Germany, in which there are no more “white breads”. These statements must also sound strange to people on the run. Is Steier saving the refugees and migrants just to live out his aversion to Germany?

The refugee helpers on the boats in the Mediterranean enjoy a high reputation and receive many donations, they are supported by the churches. They are therefore quite accountable and have to answer questions like those asked by the BZ.

Maassen exaggerates when he speaks of “eliminatory racism against whites”. He provocatively uses the term “eliminatory”, which is used in connection with the genocide of European Jews by the National Socialists. That is why he is now being accused of playing down the Holocaust.

But Steier also seems to have gone astray and does not even consider it necessary to explain his irritating Twitter words. While Maaßen is declared persona non grata and sent to the desert, nobody is bothered by Axel Steier’s failure.

The public’s reaction to the opponents is more than unbalanced. Anyone who condemns Maassen should tell Steier what he thinks.
