19-year-old arouses interest
19 years young, German U21 national player, market value 2 million euros – there are only seven players in the Austrian Bundesliga who are rated higher in the U20 age group than Eric Martel. And since the defensive midfielder went on loan from RB Leipzig to FK Austria Vienna in January 2021, there are only four professionals outside of series champion Red Bull Salzburg who have achieved a larger increase in market value. All of this actually speaks for a return to the parent club and a gradual integration into the Bundesliga squad from the coming season. According to the “Kicker”, Leipzig sees it differently: According to a report in the magazine, Martel has no future at RB.
According to this, Leipzig signaled to the native of Straubing, who switched from the youth Jahn Regensburg to the NLZ der Sachsen in 2017, that they were not planning with him in the coming season. With Martel’s contract expiring in 2023, there are only two options: renewal and loan again, or a permanent move. According to the “kicker”, there are plenty of interested parties, and inquiries have come in from the German upper house as well as from abroad. Martel had even been linked to Manchester United by the English tabloids in December.
At the beginning of March, Austria coach Manfred Schmid said on “Sky” in Austria regarding a possible future for Martel with the Violets: “This decision is up to the player. But I also know that at some point he wants to take the next step. I’m assuming it won’t be easy.” Schmid said back in January that he would have confidence in Martel in the Premier League.
