PSC, Junts and ERC accept a ‘truth commission’ behind closed doors for the deaths in residences in Catalonia

The parliamentary groups ERC, JuntsxCat and PSC have forced this Wednesday the creation of a working group, composed of party-appointed expertsto know what happened during the pandemic in thes geriatric and disabled residences in Catalonia.

With the creation of this working group this Wednesday in the Social Rights Commission of the Parliament, the Commission of investigation claimed by the relatives of the deceased.

In Comú Podem, Ciudadanos and CUP have refrained from creating this working group, considering that they are trying to “pass the buck,” according to the CUP deputy.

The working group of experts has been approved with the thirteen votes of the deputies of ERC, JxCat, PSC and Vox and the abstention of En Comú Podem, Ciudadanos and the CUP.

In fact, the Parliament launched an investigation commission on what happened in residences for the elderly and people with disabilities in Catalonia in the previous legislature, but it declined with the elections of February 2021.

The issue has been on the table of the games for months and the three groups that today have opted for the creation of the working group voted against the creation of a new investigation commission last November.

The deputy of the PSC, Raúl Moreno, has indicated during the justification for the creation of the new working group that in it “everyone will be heard” and that “a serious task of investigation will be carried out to change what has to be change”, in reference to the residences.

The representatives of the CUP, En Comú Podem and Ciudadanos have reproached the promoters of the working group that “this is not the formula”, since a working group does not have the status of a commission of inquiry.
