Ecuador has expanded the protected nature reserve around the Galapagos Islands by 60,000 square kilometers. It now joins the reserve around Costa Rica’s Cocos Island. This creates a safe migration route of almost a thousand kilometers for whales, sharks and sea turtles, among others.
