PROJECT TOKYO 2023 – Press Release

Japan in the focus of the German fashion industry
– German federal participation starts on the occasion of PROJECT TOKYO, 15.
– March 16, 2023, Tokyo, Japan
– Japan as a stable and strong export market Financial support from German manufacturers and designers

Opening up new markets or strengthening existing contacts are the focus of fashion companies and designers in these busy times. One country is increasingly becoming the focus of the German fashion industry: Japan.

The country is characterized by a wealthy, well-educated population with a very high per capita sales of clothing, which is about three times as high as in China. Another advantage: the high per capita sales enable efficient distribution, since consumers are concentrated in the largest cities of Tokyo,

Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo focus. “Japan is a market with its own rules, but not that far removed from the European markets in terms of structure and, above all, mentality,” explains Petra Bleibohm, export expert from the German Fashion Association Germany. “The Japanese apparel market is a unique market with a competitive environment that is different from the rest of the world. Compared to other countries, Japan has a larger middle class, which has been strongly influenced by the trending mid-range market.”

The commitment of the Federal Ministry of Economics to enable German companies to participate in the PROJECT TOKYO is all the more gratifying. The fashion fair will take place from March 15th to 16th, 2023 in the TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FORUM, in the middle of the trendy Ginza district.

Thanks to the commitment of the umbrella organization textil+mode together with GermanFashion Modeverband Deutschland, financial support is made possible within the framework of the federal government’s foreign trade fair program.

PROJECT TOKYO, which takes place twice a year, is organized by Informa Markets Japan Co, Ltd as a sister event to PROJECT, a trade fair that also takes place twice a year in New York and Las Vegas (USA).

The Nuremberg trade fair company FAIRS, which has already looked after fashion fairs in many countries in terms of organization and content, was commissioned as the implementing company on the German side. “The trade fair has an unbeatable unique selling proposition: it combines high-quality women’s and men’s collections as well as accessories and lifestyle products. Creativity and business meet here. Sourcing providers are consistently excluded,” says Mirjam Dietz from Informa.

“Even under the Covid-19 circumstances, the event has seen an excellent turnout from Japanese buyers over the past two and a half years. Under normal circumstances, buyers from South Korea, Taiwan, China and other overseas countries also find their way to PROJECT TOKYO, which was the case again at the last event at the end of August 2022.”

For the next PROJECT TOKYO, the organizer is again offering a top-class match-making program (private matching) in the run-up to and during the trade fair. German labels also benefit from the special services of the German country pavilion.

Comprehensive information about the Japanese retail market is available on request.
