Probation service for prisoners to be created in Russia

In Russia, a law has been prepared on the creation of a probation service for prisoners. This service should prepare those who are released for life in the wild. The service can be created as early as mid-2023, explained Russian Minister of Justice Konstantin Chuichenko at a meeting with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

Konstantin Chuichenko noted that the approval of the draft law on the probation service before being submitted to the State Duma is almost completed. Vladimir Putin approved the creation of the service. And besides, he agreed to the creation of the post of deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN), which will deal with the work of the probation service.

On the TV channel “Russia 24” and media platforms We look, which showed the meeting, Putin added that it is necessary to keep a register of those who undergo the probation procedure. Chuichenko confirmed that work on approbation will begin even in places of detention, and then a person will be given the opportunity to receive education, legal advice, psychological assistance and assistance in establishing “socially useful ties.” Also released under the approbation program will be provided with social and medical services.

As a graduate of the law faculty of St. Petersburg University, Putin understood and fully approved the decision to establish a probation service.

In addition, Chuichenko told the head of the Russian state that there are now 483,000 prisoners in the country. At the same time, 109 thousand of them are in jail. At the same time, by 2030, with the implementation of the Concept for the development of the penitentiary system, the number of prisoners should be reduced to 300 thousand people. Putin approved the idea of the head of the Ministry of Justice to increase the venues forced labor instead of colonies. Already created 15 thousand places for forced labor, and by 2024 they will be opened for another 100,000 convicts.

As an example, Konstantin Chuichenko cited the experience of the Russian Empire in 1913. Then, with a population of 134 million people, 198 thousand people were in prison. Now the population of Russia is 146 million people.

“I would not say that it differs significantly,” said Konstantin Chuichenko, speaking of the country’s population.

At the same time, Chuichenko recalled that in the 1990s there were more than a million people in places of detention.
