Princess Amalia will become the new head of state of the Netherlands sometime around 2040, but we still know very little about our future queen. “She is said to be in a WhatsApp group with fellow sufferers.”

If King Willem-Alexander abdicates at the same age as his mother Beatrix, Princess Amalia will become the new queen of our country in seventeen years. She is now only 21 years old and will be around forty by then. What awaits her is a life full of control: Amalia will never be able to go all out.

WhatsApp group

What is it like growing up in a golden cage? Not many people know it, but according to royalty journalist Rick Evers, she is in a very select WhatsApp group with a number of others who do know.

During the recent change of throne in Luxembourg, Amalia saw a number of members of that group in real life, Rick writes in the Weekend. “A transfer of power is always special, but for Amalia it has an extra charge. There she sees with her own eyes what awaits her one day: a generation that hands over the baton.”

Networking

Sun happening is very important to Amalia, says Rick. “For a budding heir to the throne, it’s more than ‘being present’ at a ceremony. It’s where she can network with ‘colleagues’.”

The Belgian Crown Princess and the new Grand Ducal Couple of Luxembourg are also ‘useful for the network’, he continues. “At such moments, a bond is forged between young heirs to the throne who will see each other often in the coming decades.”

Fellow sufferers

Only these kinds of people can really understand Amalia, says Rick. “They understand each other’s position, pressure and responsibilities in a way that no one else can. Fortunately, the lines of communication are already short, Amalia and Elisabeth have each other’s number and are said to be in a WhatsApp group with other fellow sufferers.”

The chance that those conversations will ever end up on a juice channel is small, but people are curious, the royalty journalist concludes. “You can see it in the likes, visitor numbers, viewing figures: the Netherlands is curious, the Netherlands wants more.”
