Prime Minister Rutte calls on the Dutch: do not cross the border to Belgium or Germany Abroad

The Dutch should not cross the border to Belgium or Germany, says resigning Prime Minister Mark Rutte. He emphasizes that the advice is to have as little contact with others as possible. This also means that people do not go to neighboring countries to visit cities or to shop, for example.

According to Rutte, if people have to go to Belgium or Germany, for example for work, they should prepare well and adhere to the measures that apply there. He advises holidaymakers to stay at the holiday address.

At last weekend’s press conference, Rutte and corona minister Hugo de Jonge were asked whether people are still allowed to go on holiday. De Jonge said that this was allowed, as long as the applicable rules were adhered to.

The governor of Antwerp Cathy Berx and German mayors of border municipalities have already called on the Dutch to stay away in recent days. They fear that the Dutch will take the more contagious omikron variant across the border. “Don’t drop down here,” said Berx. According to her, the Dutch are welcome again if it turns out not to be too bad with omikron.

Yellow travel advice applies in the Netherlands for both Belgium and Germany. This means that you can travel to the countries, but you have to take safety risks into account. Dutch people who want to cross the border must show a valid corona pass.

Rutte often called for not to cross the border to neighboring countries because of the corona rules. Around Easter, he and the Prime Minister of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet expressed their support for this.
