Newcastle United is about to qualify for the Champions League as one of six teams from the Premier League. Chelsea FC must now tremble.
Ligapokal winner Newcastle won the direct duel of the royal class candidates 2-0 (1-0) and moved to Manchester City, which the day before at relegated FC Southampton (0: 0) failed in third place. The Italian international Sandro Tonali (2nd) and the Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes (90th) met for the hosts. Chelseas Nicholas Jackson saw the red card (36.) after an elbow strike against Sven Botman after VAR intervention.
Extremely tight races for a total of six CL tickets
The Premier League will be the first division in the coming season to set six participants in the Champions League. Only master FC Liverpool (35 games/82 points) has so far secured his ticket. The second -placed FC Arsenal (35/67), who is guest on the Angeld Road in the evening (5:30 p.m.), has the best chances.
Behind it, Newcastle (36/66), the dethroned defending champion City (36/65), Chelsea (36/63), Aston Villa (36/63) and Nottingham Forest (36/62) around the three other tickets that are assigned via the league. Because of the successful performance of the English club in the European cups, the Premier League received a fifth Champions League place.
Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur will receive the sixth ticket for the Champions League as the winner of the English duel in the final of the Europa League on May 21 in Bilbao.
