Photoshop, but simpler: try these photo editors | Tech

Everyone wants to edit a photo or image sooner or later. With the apps below you can get started quickly, without having to master complex apps like Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop is a household name in the graphic design world. The program lets you edit photos and other visual material and is the standard in the business world. Yet for people who do not work with it on a daily basis, it can be quite an overwhelming tool. If you don’t have the energy to delve into the countless functions, there are low-threshold alternatives here.

1. Creative Cloud Express
Creative Cloud Express is Adobe itself and offers a simplified version of the graphic tools Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and Premier. With this software package you can, among other things, remove a background, crop or merge videos, or compose a color palette and export your images as PDF.

Designed with the budding creative in mind, Creative Cloud Express has a library of social media templates and can automatically resize for different platforms.

2. canvas
This online tool is available both free and paid. The free version still gives you access to over 8,000 templates that let you design just about anything from Instagram posts to wedding invitations. However, if you opt for a free version of Canva, all designs you create will be watermarked, or you will have to pay a dollar to remove it. Definitely worth considering. Or you go for the paid version to unlock all features right away.

3. Pixlr X
Editing a photo with the free Pixlr X is simple and does not require any editing experience. All you need to do is upload a photo that you want to edit or choose one from the app’s library of stock photos. Then you choose the resolution of the photo and you can create it.

The photo editing tools allow you to crop photos, remove the background or adjust the color values. You also have hundreds of filters and effects to choose from. A child can do the laundry.

4.Sky Luminar 4
This tool is suitable for amateurs, beginners and professionals. Handy is the online user manual with different categories for each set of functions. This way you quickly learn about the functions you need and you can ignore more difficult functions.

The interface is very intuitive and it is packed with useful tools. How about an artificial intelligence that adjusts the atmosphere of photos, without you having to think much about it yourself?

5. Gimp
Over the years, this free photo editor has become one of the most popular tools for inexperienced users. Gimp has been available since 1996 and is still very popular. With the available color or image editing tools you can quickly adjust the hue, saturation or contrast of your photos, but you can also work with multiple layers or masks.

Gimp’s interface is very accessible and you won’t need much time to get the hang of the program, even if you are completely new to the world of photo editing. The tutorials are also very useful, if you get stuck you will quickly find an answer and you can continue.

Destructive image editing and non-destructive image editing
When you edit a photo, the image information of the individual pixels changes. If you do that directly in the photo file and then save that photo, those edits are usually irreversible, but that depends on the app. Such an operation is called destructive, as the original information disappears from the photo.

Some apps edit images non-destructively. The original image file remains and the edits are saved as a copy where you can immediately see the difference between the original and new image. The moment you export or convert the edited image, it becomes final.
