Pelé discharged from hospital after tumor treatment

São Paulo (dpa) – The football legend Pelé, suffering from cancer, was discharged from a hospital in Brazil after two weeks of treatment.

“As I promised you, I will spend Christmas with my family,” wrote the 81-year-old on Twitter and published a photo on which he can be seen smiling. “The patient is stable and will continue the treatment of a colon tumor that was discovered in September this year,” the Brazilian media quoted from a statement from the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo.

At the beginning of September, Pelé had a tumor removed from the colon that doctors had previously discovered during a routine examination. He had to stay in the hospital for about a month after the procedure.

His health has repeatedly been a cause for concern over the past few years. He underwent several hip operations. He also had problems with his spine and knee. Two years ago he had a kidney stone removed after a urinary tract infection. Pelé made 92 appearances for Brazil and won three world championship titles (1958, 1962, 1970).
