OUR OPINION. It’s easy to be principled when you get a golden parachute as a minister in free fall

Resigning ministers have become a rare breed. An error? That is no longer a reason for a C4. A lie? Ah! Then we would already have had new heads of government. If a minister is still fired because of a lie, it is because, like Joke Schauvliege, just before the elections they are more lead than gold for the party. In short: ministers will certainly no longer resign as a matter of principle. Principles in politics are like winds. They are held and when it fails, you release them very quietly. This is how the late Gaston Eyskens put it.
