Oterleek lift bridge closed until May for major maintenance, stairs removed to keep jumpers out

The lift bridge in Oterleek will be closed for more than five months due to major maintenance. A temporary bridge will be placed for pedestrians and cyclists. The 1952 bridge over the Ringvaart will be given a new coating and will be prepared so that it can eventually be operated remotely. Measures are also being taken to prevent bridge jumpers.

The actual one activities starting November 14 and lasting until the end of April. During that period, car traffic has to take a detour. The waterway is also completely blocked. Preparations are already starting today to get started in mid-November.

Bridge jumpers

The more than seventy-year-old bridge will have a steel bridge deck, the railings will be raised and the lifting towers will be renovated. The stairs on those towers will be removed so that bridge jumpers can no longer climb them.

The existing sheet pile wall at the parking bay will also be replaced by a concrete variant. To prepare the bridge for remote control from Heerhugowaard, barriers and cameras are being placed on poles.

Detour

During the work, traffic will be diverted via signs via the Huygendijk (N508), Rustenburgerweg, Noordervaart (N243) and the Oterlekerweg, see the map below. The temporary pontoon bridge for pedestrians can also be used by cyclists, provided they dismount and carry their bicycle by the hand.
