Former French soccer player Dimitri Payet leaves his heart club Olympique Marseille prematurely. This was announced by the 36-year-old and club president Pablo Longoria at a joint press conference on Friday at the Stade Velodrome. Payet’s contract originally ran until 2024.
“This is not an easy moment. We have decided not to continue the adventure. It has taken many weeks of thought and discussion,” Longoria said. Payet is “a very important part of the history of the club”. The free-kick specialist announced that he wanted to “keep playing” somewhere else.
The 38-cap international (eight goals) returned to OM in January 2017, where he had previously played from 2013-2015. In between, the 2016 European runners-up was active at West Ham United in the Premier League.
