Olympics 2022 | Nordic Combined: Eric Frenzel enjoys the freedom and hopes to start in the relay

Combined athlete Eric Frenzel reacted with great relief to his release from the corona quarantine.

“It was very nice to see everyone again and to be able to enjoy the feeling of freedom. That was very pleasant,” said the three-time Olympic champion after his first night in the team hotel. Frenzel was released from his hotel isolation on Monday evening after eleven days.

In the individual on the large hill on Tuesday, Frenzel will not be used yet and will instead cheer on his local colleagues.

“I’ll support the boys to finally feel that Olympic feeling that I’ve been missing for a few days. That’s important to me,” revealed the 33-year-old.

Olympia 2022: happy ending for Frenzel?

Frenzel is now hoping to compete in the relay on Thursday, where he can become the first combined athlete in history to win his fourth Olympic gold medal.

“The health checks went very well. The doctors gave me the go-ahead to stress me,” said Frenzel, who, however, won’t be able to climb the hill for the first time until Wednesday.

Frenzel still has to fight for his starting place there, national coach Hermann Weinbuch has five athletes available for four places.

“First of all, I have to show very good jumps. The guys here are all in good form. It’s not easy to get in there. Hopefully I’ll be able to offer myself and then I’ll wait for the coaches’ decision,” said Frenzel.
