On Wednesday, Italian luxury brand Marni flew to Tokyo to present its Fall/Winter 2023 collection. The choice of location was based on the model of the resort shows, for which luxury houses often travel. The collection, in turn, reflected Marni’s iconic design cues – polka dots, bright colors and geometric lines – and was accompanied by a string orchestra.
Fashion in the midst of an orchestra
The show took place in the circular, white-clad setting of the Yoyogi Grand Olympic Gymnasium. To the plucked notes of a violin, the first monochrome silhouettes in red and yellow met in the middle of the orchestra. The color palette was limited to the primary colors and set the rhythm of the first part of the runway show before window checks and polka dots took over in a black and white palette.
Artist Sol LeWitt and composer and jazz pianist Sun Ra were named as sources of inspiration in a statement. The cheerful collection consists of clear silhouettes, tailoring, precise cuts and voluminous coats.
Marni’s geometric and colorful fashion has captivated Japanese customers for a number of years. The Italian brand settled there in 2000 and, with 23 percent of total sales, now counts the country as one of its largest markets, reports the US trade magazine WWD.
The label’s creative director, Francesco Risso, explained that the house’s goal is to be present in the “epicentres” of its communities. In September, Marni presented its spring/summer 2023 collection under the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
Today, the luxury brand operates a total of 28 sales outlets in Japan.
