Oeko-Tex introduces tool for measuring CO2 emissions and water consumption

The company Oeko-Tex, which specializes in sustainable solutions, has presented its new “Impact Calculator”, which can be used to measure and quantify CO2 emissions and water consumption in line with the climate goals of fashion companies.

The tool enables brands to identify the biggest impacts on carbon emissions and water use in their production process and determine where they need to take action to improve their operations and meet reduction targets. In addition, it enables customers, investors and stakeholders to have a better understanding of a company’s carbon and water footprint data, thus ensuring greater transparency.

In a product and company life cycle assessment, Oeko-Tex has identified over 100 key production activities that can help measure carbon emissions and water consumption. The real-time data provided by the tool provides insight into a company’s footprint at plant level, per processing step or per kilogram of material produced.

“Transparency is key to measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption in supply chains. The inclusion of criteria for CO2 emissions and water consumption is a logical step towards even more transparency,” said Oeko-Tex Secretary General Georg Dieners in a statement.

The industry-specific tool will be available to Step by Oeko-Tex customers. The calculations will be included in the company certification and give them the opportunity to receive the product label “Made in Green by Oeko-Tex”.

During the year, the company will also launch a new corporate due diligence certification called Responsible Business by Oeko-Tex. This certification recognizes brands and retailers that are committed to complying with international agreements protecting human rights and the environment.
