The serious injuries in skiing don’t stop: now downhill ace Sofia Goggia broke her shin – and joins the ranks of numerous injured stars.

There is the next high-profile failure in the Alpine Ski World Cup. The Italian downhill specialist Sofia Goggia was seriously injured in a training fall.

The 31-year-old broke her tibia and tibial ankle in the accident on a slope in Ponte di Legno in the north of the country, said the Italian ski association Fisi. Goggia had to undergo surgery in a hospital in Milan that afternoon. Her right leg hit a gate on a right-hand bend. After the fall, she was rescued by a helicopter.

Goggia, the 2018 Olympic downhill champion, has often struggled with injuries in the past. She was already out in 2021 due to a fracture of the tibial plateau in her right knee and missed the home World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The following year she injured her knee. She also broke her left hand at the end of 2022.

Recently there have been numerous notable failures in the Alpine World Cup. For the former overall World Cup winners Aleksander Aamodt Kilde from Norway, Alexis Pinturault from France and Petra Vlhova from Slovakia, the season was over due to serious injuries. Exceptional US rider Mikaela Shiffrin also sat out the last race due to a violent fall.
