New York Yankees force playoff

The New York Yankees kept their dream of a 28th Major League Baseball (MLB) title alive.

The record champions equalized in the play-off quarter-finals with a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians to make it 2-2 and forced the decider.

The best-of-five series ends on Monday (local time) in New York.

The winner will meet the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series starting Wednesday, with the San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies contesting the second semifinal (National League). Four wins are required to enter the World Series (from October 28).

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole only allowed two runs in six hits, Harrison Bader hit a home run that led to the 3-0 lead.

New York last won the MLB title in 2009. Cleveland, which is playing its first season under the new name after the Indians were renamed the Guardians, has been awaiting its third championship since 1948.
