Natterjack delays start of construction at Pankower Tor

The master plan for the planned large-scale Pankower Tor construction site with 2,000 apartments, a library, 2 day-care centers, an elementary school, a bicycle store and a park is in place.

“There’s just one small problem bouncing through the project. The cute natterjack toad,” said investor Kurt Krieger (74) on Wednesday evening at the presentation. Then he becomes clearer: “For five years it was not possible to decide on a resettlement concept. There are two alternative areas to choose from in Brandenburg.”

A top-level discussion with Senators Andreas Geisel (SPD/Bauen) and Bettina Jarasch (Environment/Greens) should bring clarity next week. The governing mayor Franziska Giffey (43, SPD) asked the furniture billionaire: “Speak a word of power! You are the boss.”

The natterjack toad (yellow line on the back) is strictly protected and only occurs on the wasteland of the former goods yard between the Pankow and Heinersdorf stations. “If she stays there, she dies, everyone knows that,” says Krieger. And: “The start of construction depends on the solution to the problem.”

Krieger, who initially focused more on retail, didn’t want to build more than 2,000 apartments: “They should be nice apartments.” On 5-6 floors with green roofs. However, residents fear that the development will be too dense.

“We’re not building a spaceship, we’re continuing to build the city,” replies Mayor Sören Benn (54, Left). “Of course we need the density, we are in the center of Pankow, not in the country.”

“It’s one of the central flagship projects for Heimat Berlin,” said Giffey. If the Natterjack problem is solved, there could be planning permission in 2024. At the same time, preparatory work such as soil remediation is to be carried out.
