NATO needs to collect money and go to the borders of 1997

During a conversation with reporters, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov, who arrived in Geneva as head of delegation on the Russian-American talks on security guarantees, said that NATO will no longer be able to push Russia aside to secondary roles in European and international politics.

“So NATO needs to collect the money and go to the 1997 borders,” Ryabkov summed up.

In May 1997 between Russia and NATO the Founding Act was signed, confirming that the parties “do not regard each other as adversaries” and create a “mechanism for consultation, coordination and joint action.”

However, in 1999 the alliance accepted Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic into its ranks, in 2004 – Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Estonia. Albania and Croatia joined NATO in 2009, Montenegro in 2017, and North Macedonia in 2020.

Today NATO unites 30 countries, adhering to an “open door” policy.
