Multimillionaire in prison for life dies of cardiac arrest

American multimillionaire Robert Durst, who was sentenced to life in prison for murder in October last year, died of cardiac arrest. He was 78 years old. A businessman with a fortune of $ 100 million was found guilty of the murder of a close acquaintance, which he committed more than 20 years ago. The woman was found shot to death shortly before she was supposed to testify in the case of the mysterious disappearance of Robert Durst’s first wife.

From prison – straight to the hospital. 78-year-old Robert Durst was taken to the intensive care unit of Stockton Hospital – a city in the state of California the day before. Doctors fought for the life of the convict. But the heart of the old millionaire could not stand it. The heir to one of the largest financial empires in the United States has passed away. After the sentence, he spent only three months in prison, so short was his life sentence.

“According to the court decision, Mr. Durst, you are sentenced to life imprisonment, without the possibility of pardon and release,” – announced the judge.

Robert Durst can be called a life-wasting man. He himself admitted more than once: he has more money than he is able to spend. And his fate was filled with dashing twists and turns in the style of crime dramas. In 1982, his first wife, college student Kathleen Durst, disappeared. Before that, she allegedly declared a desire to divorce her husband. Then there was no evidence against Durst.

“Bob met Katie through mutual friends. The worst thing that happened to her was meeting Bob. What would I tell him? Where is my daughter? What have you done to her?” – grieves Kathleen’s mother Emm McCormack.

On the eve of Christmas 2000, another person close to Durst was found dead – Susan Berman. The millionaire’s friend and writer was killed at her home near Beverly Hills with a shot in the back of the head, as if during a gang showdown. And it happened just before the woman was planned to be interrogated by the police about the murder of Kathleen Durst. According to one version, Susan could have known about the involvement of her friend Robert in the massacre of his wife. It is noteworthy that after the murder, someone sent a letter to the police, which provided the address where the murder took place. Durst then went on the run. He hid in Texas, and soon the dismembered remains of his neighbor Maurice Black were found in the bay. The man recognized the rich man who was on the federal wanted list and was going to report this to the police. But he didn’t have time. For the murder of Black in 2003, Durst was put on trial. The prosecution had incontrovertible evidence of the bloody millionaire’s guilt: traces of him were found on a knife, two saws and an ax. But his lawyers managed to convince the jury: it was self-defense. Black was the first to rush with the pistol, and Durst only defended himself. I got rid of the body in a panic.

The detectives did not find evidence of Robert Durst’s involvement in the murder of Susan Berman. And Durst would have escaped responsibility if not for the case. In 2015, HBO filmed a documentary film about the life of the heir to the real estate empire: “Damnation. The life and death of Robert Durst.” At some point, journalists drove the billionaire into a dead end. Durst was asked about the similarity of handwriting in the letter he authored and in the same note that someone sent to the police after the murder of Susan Berman. Even the errors were the same in the samples. After the interview, Durst went out into the corridor and, in his feelings, began to talk to himself. Forgetting that the camera is still recording sound, and there is a microphone on his clothes.

“What the hell have I done? Killed them all, of course,” said the millionaire.

It was this confession that prompted a new investigation into the murder of Susan Berman. The investigation and trial lasted six years. Durst never admitted his guilt, but this time the jury did not believe him. So the 78-year-old man went to serve a life sentence. And although the protagonist of this incredible life-long story is already dead, there are too many questions left after his departure to forget about Robert Durst forever. For example, those close to his first wife still do not know anything about her fate. And some even believe that Durst is involved in a series of disappearances of women across America. A sketch of the alleged kidnapper of one of the missing girls resembles Durst. It is not known whether these crimes will ever be investigated and the secrets of the bloody billionaire fully disclosed.
