Motorcyclist dies in serious traffic accident in Merkem
The 28-year-old man drove together with two other motards from Ypres in the direction of Diksmuide. On the way they overtook two cars and a tractor. Shortly after the overtaking manoeuvre, just before the Langewade restaurant, one of the three lost control of the steering wheel. He probably lost his balance due to a combination of his speed and the strong wind.
The motorcycle crashed into a parked truck trailer, which was parked along the road. The motard ended up in the middle of the lane and died on the spot.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the victim was unable to help. Part of the Iepersteenweg was temporarily inaccessible to traffic in both directions. The public prosecutor’s office decided not to appoint an expert, as the circumstances of the accident were quite clear. In addition, no third parties were involved in the crash.
