Media: Eberl plans to resign from Borussia Mönchengladbach

Mönchengladbach (dpa) – After almost a decade and a half, Max Eberl wants to prematurely end the relationship with his heart club. According to media reports, the 48-year-old wants to stop as sporting director at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

According to Sky, Sport1 and “Bild” he is planning his resignation after the previous season has not brought the hoped-for success with the new coach Adi Hütter and Borussia is instead fighting relegation. The search for a successor is already underway within the club.

When exactly the resignation should take place is therefore still open. This is possible in the next few days or at the latest at the end of the season, wrote Sky. The “Bild” reported that Eberl Gladbach boss Rolf Königs should have asked for a release from the post of sports director on January 31st. The 80-year-old is said to have refused. Eberl’s contract is actually valid until the end of June 2026.

Eberl has been sporting director for his Gladbach team since October 2008, and his work has been greatly appreciated over the years. The former youth player at FC Bayern Munich has also been linked to the German record champions from time to time in the past.

Due to the massive sporting crisis in the current season, Eberl also came under criticism in Gladbach. Before the season, he had brought Hütter from Eintracht Frankfurt for 7.5 million euros to succeed Marco Rose, whose early departure from Gladbach to Borussia Dortmund had already caused discord. After 20 games this season, Gladbacher Borussia is only in twelfth place under Hütter. With 22 points, the club is only three points ahead of the relegation rank.

According to “Bild”, Eberl is said to have already sought talks with part of the team, which has already suffered ten defeats this season and recently disgraced itself with the end of the DFB Cup against Hannover 96. According to Sport1. he is said to have approached the management of the club before Christmas with thoughts of leaving. Eberl should no longer have the feeling that he can develop the team further.

According to the broadcaster Sky, Borussia does not want to dissolve the contract with Eberl, just let it rest. That would also offer the Bundesliga club, which can hardly count on international income next season, the possibility of transfer proceeds for Eberl.
