Marzahn-Hellersdorf has an incidence of 0 – because the technology fails!

The year is 2022 and we live in a world full of state-of-the-art technology. But how far are the capital authorities actually in terms of digitization?

In the BZ we reported on everyday life in the Spandau health department. In the center: A huge fax machine, on which Corona messages are received, which then have to be transferred to the computer by hand… But even with new technology, the authorities are not safe from breakdowns!

Current example: the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office. Since January 8, the local health department has not been able to report any more corona numbers to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso).

The district’s Corona database could not cope with the huge amount of data. “Everything worked again on Thursday,” says District Mayor Gordon Lemm (44, SPD).

But soon after, a new problem arose. Experts plan to meet early Monday morning at 6 a.m. to find a solution.

“We can currently only report the corona numbers that reach us by fax,” says Lemm. The authority is now considering how at least approximate figures can be reported.

Not only the health authorities have their problems with the topic of digitization. It is true that more than 100 services can now be carried out via the Internet (including business registration and deregistration, applying for a gun owner’s license, submitting noise complaints).

But: For the registration of an apartment, the application for a new identity card or passport, a personal visit to the Citizens’ Registration Office and a signature is required. The dates are usually fully booked for months.

The CDU MP Johannes Kraft (44) calls for an analysis of systems and procedures in the offices. “Media breaks must be avoided there,” he says. Too often people switch from phone to fax to e-mail. “Private-sector companies started doing this decades ago in order to enable a fast and consistent chain of communication.”

On Sunday, the BZ sent a list of questions on the subject to the internal administration – of course also by fax. There was no answer at the time of going to press.
