MARKETS ASIA/Mixed – Poor corporate numbers weigh on Tokyo

TOKYO/SHANGHAI (Dow Jones) — Stock markets in East Asia and Australia show no consistent trend midweek. Initial support from Wall Street is fading across most trading venues. In the US, stock prices rose sharply on Tuesday after US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell made less hawkish statements than feared at an appearance.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei slipped 0.4 percent, weighed down by the firmer yen and disappointing reporting and outlook from domestic companies. Nintendo are cheaper after a profit warning by 7.4 percent. Sharp (-13.3%) also issued a profit warning. Softbank Group (-5.7%) surprised negatively with a loss in the third fiscal quarter. Numbers and outlook for Subaru (-1.8%) are also received negatively.

The Chinese stock exchanges give up initial gains and tend to be slightly in the red. Shanghai’s composite index slips 0.3 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index slips 0.2 percent. Meanwhile, the Kospi in Seoul is up 1.2 percent. The index is boosted by technology stocks, which follow their US counterparts higher. Index heavyweight Samsung Electronics is up 2.1 percent. SK Hynix improve by 4.5 percent.

The Australian stock market closed 0.3 percent higher, supported by the financials and materials sectors. Among individual stocks, Suncorp rose 4.6 percent after the insurer presented convincing financial results. The figures from the building materials manufacturer Boral (+13%) were also well received.
