Marie-Joséplein Ostend is being redesigned: disruption until the end of February
Ostend’s Marie-Joséplein is a junction in the city where trams and buses stop close to the main shopping streets. The makeover of the square will be the final part of the city center renovation. Björn Anseeuw, Alderman for Public Works Ostend: “
We have already tackled Hertstraat, Christinastraat, Adolf Buylstraat and Lijnbaanstraat. Now we are indeed going to completely redesign this part of Marie-Joséplein. We do that thoroughly. Everything from the sewerage and technical subsurface will be replaced so that we are good for decades.”
To avoid problems with tram traffic, there is a temporary stop closer to the Grote Post cultural center. The works should be completed by the end of February and it will also look different above ground. “There is also a lot of greening going on. There will be nice benches and new shelters for this very busy tram stop.”

Only later will the restoration of the old tram house start. The city is even looking for a new purpose for this. Ostend also announces that ten city fountains will soon be turned on again. Savings on energy costs have meant that no fountain has been working in the city for over a year.
