Marcelino García Toral, coach of Athletic Club, made a severe self-criticism after the defeat (3-2) against Mallorca at the Son Moix stadium.
“I am sad and disappointed. We played a painful first half, the worst of the entire season. And I don’t understand it. We can lose, but not in this way,” Marcelino said at a press conference.
“I do not understand or share the image that we have given today, and I am ultimately responsible for what has happened. To win you have to make many more merits, compete more. We did not. In the first half we had one arrival in the area and zero shots between the posts. That’s not how you win games in the First Division,” he added.
When asked if his team had arrived in Mallorca exhausted due to the demanding schedule and the effort put in, Marcelino replied: “Mentally saturated is someone who does not have the money for their children at the end of the month. It is true that we have had a important load, but we had days to rest and there are no excuses”.
For the Atletico coach “football is defending and attacking and we didn’t do anything”.
“We were unable to step on the area, and that the rival started very hesitant. But we dedicated ourselves to passing the ball and playing for the sides, until they clearly surpassed us“, remarked Marcelino García Toral.
