Marc Cucurella: “Get rid of a thorn” with his return to FC Barcelona

Evergreen at Brighton

Marc Cucurella (23) is Brighton & Hove Albion’s most-used outfield player this season with 1,828 minutes in 22 games. The Spaniard has only been active for the “Seagulls” since last summer, who then paid 18 million euros to Getafe FC. As Cucurella revealed to the journalist Gerard Romero on the streaming platform “Twitch”, he could imagine returning to his homeland – to his training club FC Barcelona.

The left winger was drawn there in 2014 to the youth academy La Masia, around three years after his arrival and having gone through all the junior years, he celebrated his debut in the first team when he came on as a substitute in the final stages of the Copa del Rey at Real Murcia would. However, it was Cucurella’s only appearance with the professionals, which is why he still has an open score with his former club:

“When I left Barça, I had a little thorn in my side,” said the current international. “They didn’t give me the chance and never explained why. If I had the opportunity to return, it would be special, I would get rid of this thorn.”

Already last November, Cucurella told “DAZN” that he still had an “unfinished business” ahead of him, after all he had never been able to play for Barça at the Camp Nou. “I think that’s something I’d like to do before I retire.” While Cucurella was unlucky at Blaugrana, he has continued to develop elsewhere: in the 2018/19 season he was with SD Eibar and in the He was loaned to Getafe FC in the 2019/20 season, and gradually increased his market value at both stations.

At the latter club he jumped to his career high of 20 million euros, which he has held in England ever since (to market value development). In the squad of the “Seagulls” he is the shared third highest market value. While there is no word of a return campaign at Barça, Chelsea are said to be interested in Cucurella, whose contract on the island runs until 2026.
