The tragic misfortune of Germany’s biathlon legend Laura Dahlmeier has also hit the Finnish icon Kaisa Mäkäräinen. She got to know Dahlmeier not only in the trail, but also away from it.
“Laura’s death hits me hard,” said Mäkäräinen in an interview with the Finnish radio broadcaster “Yle” about the tragic misfortune in Pakistan, in which Dahlmeier lost her life on July 28th. “I will think of her for a long time,” added the Finnish biathlon legend, which with the Germans fought many duels in the trail and at the shooting range, but also knew it well away from it.
“We have met in a completely different way in recent years. We have talked more about other areas of life than sport,” said Mäkäräinen, who had many appearances as a TV expert after the end of her career like Dahlmeier.
Mäkäräinen: Dahlmeier had a “second break in the badger”
Dahlmeier’s great passion was always an issue in the joint talks: the mountains. “Many people forget that mountaineering can be a very natural way of life for the people who grew up in the mountains. I talked to her about the peace she felt in the mountains after ending her hectic career,” said the Finn.
Sometimes, according to Mäkäräinen, life can revolve around a “second fraction part.” This was the case with Dahlmeier and the tragic misfortune on the Laila Peak in the Karakorum Mountains.
Dahlmeier had turned on July 28 with her climbing partner before reaching the summit of Laila Peak. The 31-year-old was then hit by a rockfall on the descent. Her companion immediately informed the rescue workers, who could only fly over the hard -to -reach area with the helicopter. Dahlmeier was then also declared dead based on her statements.
