Mainz 05: Bo Svensson’s decision at half past three in the morning

Separation from the coach

The separation between 1. FSV Mainz 05 and coach Bo Svensson was decided the night after the cup exit at Hertha BSC. Svensson, sports director Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt sat down in the hotel in Berlin immediately after the 3-0 defeat, as Heidel told a press conference on Friday. According to Heidel, the decision was made at 3:30 a.m. “That was a separation at the highest level, on equal terms,” said the official. The process is “light years away from a layoff or termination.”

“I have experienced a few breakups with coaches. There were never any pleasant ones, but the thing with Bo hurt everyone, including me. That reminded me of saying goodbye to Jürgen Klopp,” said Heidel about the 44-year-old Dane, whose points average of 1.38 in 104 games this millennium at FSV was only achieved by Klopp (1.51) and Thomas Tuchel (1.43). and Jörn Andersen (1.88).

Svensson appeared in front of the team he had looked after since January 2021 on Thursday afternoon. “He gave a very moving speech there. I don’t know how many people cried – I was there,” said 60-year-old Heidel. The team was dejected afterwards. After his departure, Svensson sent an emotional message to the fans: “I have been a Mainz player for 16 years. I learned a lot here, met so many great people, in the club, among the fans, in the city, my children grew up here in Mainz. The experiences will shape me for the rest of my life. But unfortunately, due to sporting developments, the time has come to realize that no individual is above the club and that all forces must now be pooled together to master the sporting situation. Unfortunately that won’t be the case with me, but unfortunately that’s how it has to be. Now more than ever, the club and team need the solidarity that has always distinguished us.”

Interim coach Siewert could take over 1. FSV Mainz 05 permanently

The previous U23 coach Jan Siewert is supposed to prepare the 05ers for the Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). According to Heidel, it could also become a permanent solution: “We saw exactly how he approached the team. He is a very important coach at Mainz 05. Anything can happen after that. We haven’t spoken to any other coaches,” said Heidel. The 60-year-old later explicitly added again: “Of course Jan is a possible candidate for the coaching position at Mainz 05.”

Heidel assured that Mainz had not yet asked for any other coach. “We actually had great hopes that we would play a different game in Berlin. We didn’t exchange a single word with any trainer or advisor. We had a lot of trust in Bo that we could do this together,” he said. Nobody could turn down the 05ers, “because we haven’t spoken to anyone.”

“Touched me”: Rose impressed by video of ex-Mainz coach Svensson

Marco Rose was moved by Svensson’s separation from Mainz 05. “I just saw his video of him saying goodbye for the first time. “It’s a really big sport, I have to say,” said the RB Leipzig coach on Friday. “It touched me. Good guy, great person, great coach.” Rose played with Svensson in Mainz and the two have a friendship.

Due to the change of coach, Mainz is more difficult to analyze for Leipzig. “The fact is that a team awaits us that has quality and that has struggled in the last few weeks,” said Rose. It is a team that “certainly doesn’t belong down there, where the head now also plays a certain role”.
