Magdeburg still unbeaten: error festival in Kiel: Holstein misses the lead in the table

Holstein Kiel suffered the first setback of the young season and missed the leap to the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team lost on Sunday (20.08.2023) after two wins at the start of the league 2: 4 (1: 2) against 1. FC Magdeburg and had to let the guests pass them in the table.

The guests from Saxony-Anhalt got off to a great start in the Holstein Stadium. Already after 2 minutes Magdeburg took the lead due to a mistake by the hosts from Kiel: Captain Philipp Sander fabricated a bad pass from midfield towards his own back line, which became the perfect pass for Luca Schuler. The Kiel defense didn’t make a good impression and Schuler couldn’t follow. He flicked the ball over Kiel’s hopeless goalkeeper Thomas Dähne into the far corner.

After falling behind early on, Kiel was initially unimpressed and looked for a way forward, but with little penetrating power in the last third.

However, Magdeburg scored the next goal about a quarter of an hour later. Again with active support from the hosts from Kiel: this time goalkeeper Dähne made a mistake. After a rather harmless, but slightly deflected, long-range shot by Jean Hugonet from a good 20 meters, he seemed surprised and saw the ball fly over himself into the goal. (21.)

Magdeburg had already played a comfortable lead without having created any real goal threat from their own game.

Just as Magdeburg had scored, the hosts got back into the game: Daniel Heber missed the ball and then had to let Steven Skrzybski pass. Only the Magdeburg keeper kept his cool and lobbed the ball over Dominik Reimann into the goal. (32.)

Similar to Magdeburg in the first half, Kiel got off to a flying start in the second half: just five minutes after the restart, the ball wriggled in the net: A free kick from the left found its way to Friðjónsson after extra time by a defender. He somehow pokes the ball in the Magdeburg penalty area to Sander, who took off directly. The Kiel captain was then able to convert the initially blocked ball into a 2:2 equaliser.

The tie didn’t last long, however, because the mercilessly effective Magdeburg team used a nice counterattack to take the lead again in the 68th minute: a cross from the left lands on Luc Castaignos, who has just come on as a substitute, and who clarifies the ball from a good six meters into the goal.

Especially bitter for the Kiel keeper Dähne, who had little to do overall, but had to reach behind him three times.

In added time, Ahmet Arsland made everything clear in the Holstein Stadium and scored to make it 4-2 (90+1).
