For Wiegert, a burnout is “just a form of depression”, but this could take many different courses. “I’m afraid of depression? Of course I’m afraid of depression. Maybe I have a depression? I don’t know.”

The Magdeburg coach, known for his passionate way on the sidelines, regularly works with psychologists. He is aware that emotions sometimes boil over. “Sometimes my ass is bursting. Despite all the challenges, Wiegert describes his profession as a “dream job”. He “has a great family with two healthy children. And then this greediness comes out again: I have to win! What I sometimes go out so selfish is blatant.”

In his nine years as a coach, he said he cried three times in the cabin with players – each because of personal blows of fate. “Only the hard facts count for the public, and that is the performance at the weekend. But that is not life. This is not how life doesn’t work.”
