Lufthansa pilots threaten new strike | To travel

The pilots of the German airline Lufthansa have rejected a new salary proposal from the management and could go on strike at any moment. That says the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) on Thursday. As a result, there is a threat of even more chaos in the aviation sector.

According to VC, the latest wage proposal is a step in the right direction, but not enough to satisfy the union. VC is asking for a wage increase of 5.5 percent for this year and an automatic inflation adjustment in the future. “Legal and organizational preparations for a strike have started. Nevertheless, it is clear that VC will remain reachable,” the union reports.

Lufthansa says it is taking note of the union’s decision. “At the same time, we want to discuss the flexibility of this offer with VC and have therefore proposed further dates to the union to hold discussions. We are available at all times to continue the talks,” the airline said.

Earlier, the airline already held talks with the Ver.di union about a wage increase for ground staff. Both parties reached an agreement on this, with which further strikes and actions by about 20,000 ground workers are off the table. Lufthansa ground crews went on strike earlier. Then the group had to cancel more than a thousand flights.

The company is also facing a possible strike by pilots at Eurowings, where members can vote for possible actions until August 31.
