Four gold at the Ski World Cup: That was the goal of the Swede Ebba Andersson. But a bitter incident prevented success – and let the tears flow.
Ebba Andersson brought an unfortunate fall around her fourth gold medal at the Ski World Cup in Trondheim. The Swedish cross-country skier was promising in the 50-kilometer race in the fight for victory, but shortly before the finish there was a serious incident.
Andersson fought for the top positions with her compatriot Frida Karlsson and the Norwegians Heidi Weng and Therese Johaug. On a small departure shortly before the entrance to the stadium, Andersson’s skis got unhappy with those of Karlsson – Andersson fell. While Karlsson prevailed in the target sprint and Gold secured Weng and Johaug, Andersson came over the line 18 seconds.
After the race, the frustration with the Swedish was clearly noticeable. Completely dissolved, she broke out in tears and let her emotions run wild. Even on Swedish television, she could hardly hide her disappointment. “It is really difficult to explain,” she said, adding: “But the simplest answer is probably that Frida and I unfortunately came together.
Andersson was visibly kinked: “At the moment I only feel empty. But I hope and believe that I will still be proud – with a bit of a distance from everything.”
The disappointment about the missed precious metal weighed heavily. “It is always hard not to be on the podium, but the fact that I didn’t have a chance hurt the most,” she said in conclusion.
