Interview with Anis Hadj Moussa
The Dutch team has been unbeaten for ten matches
The Netherlands has currently been undefeated for over a year (ten matches in a row). The last team to bring the Netherlands to its knees was Spain after penalties in March 2025 for the Nations League. After that there were seven wins and three draws.
The twelve previous World Cup participations of the Dutch team
This summer, the Dutch national team will be at the Football World Cup for the twelfth time in history. How did things go in the previous eleven editions? This site lists all global final tournaments. The World Cup history of the Dutch team in a nutshell.
Tomorrow we leave for New York
Tonight is truly a farewell match, because tomorrow the Dutch selection will board the plane to New York. The friendly match against Uzbekistan awaits there on Monday evening (8.45 pm Dutch time), the last test before the World Cup really starts.
Virgil van Dijk on his way to the 100 intelrands
Memphis Depay (108 international matches) is currently on the shared fifth place when it comes to most international matches. He can match number four Rafael van der Vaart (109) with playing time against Algeria. Virgil van Dijk is on the thirteenth place with 90 international matches. Denzel Dumfries (71 international matches) can enter the top thirty.
Another record for Memphis Depay?
Memphis Depay is the all-time top scorer of the Dutch team. The Corinthians attacker has 55 international goals, five more than Robin van Persie. Memphis has now scored against 30 different countries, as many as Van Persie. He can therefore also become the sole ruler against Algeria in that row.
20 times before against African countries
The Dutch national team played a total of twenty international matches against African countries. The balance of the Dutch team against African countries is positive. Of the twenty matches, two were lost: against Egypt in 1928 and Morocco in 1999. It concerned two practice matches.
First meeting between the Netherlands and Algeria
For the first time in history, the Dutch national team will play an international match against Algeria tonight. The North African country, like the Netherlands, is one of the 48 participants in the 2026 World Cup. The Algerians are in a group with reigning world champion Argentina, Jordan and Austria.
Algeria is currently the number 28 in the FIFA world rankings. The Netherlands occupies the 7th place on the list.
The sixteen stadiums at the 2026 World Cup
These are the sixteen stadiums that will be played in from next week during the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
The Dutch team will play in the group phase Dallas (against Japan), Houston (against Sweden) and Kansas City (against Tunisia). If the Dutch team becomes group winner, it will play in the sixteenth finals in Monterrey, Mexico. If they finish second, another game awaits in Houston.
Will Hadj Moussa say goodbye to De Kuip tonight? ‘If I ever leave, I would prefer to go to England’
Will he stay with Feyenoord or will he permanently close the door in Rotterdam behind him this summer? Anis Hadj Moussa is logically keeping all options open at the moment. First the practice match with the Dutch team awaits in his own stadium, the last real test for the absolute main goal: to shine at the World Cup. Read more here.

Readers choose the Dutch team against Algeria
The Dutch national team will practice against Algeria on Wednesday evening in the run-up to the World Cup. We asked you to put together your ideal setup. The Dutch team came out with debutant Crysencio Summerville and without Memphis Depay. This should be the team (Denzel Dumfries is suspended):
Bridge; Wieffer, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; De Jong, Gravenberch, Reijnders; Summerville, Malen, Gakpo.
Which Algeria opponent should we pay attention to?
Algeria has Luca Zidane, the son of Zinedine Zidane selected for his first World Cup. He is one of four goalkeepers in the group. Zidane, 28, was Algeria’s first choice at the last Africa Cup of Nations but broke his jaw and chin during a match for his Spanish club Granada in April.
Luca Zidane previously played for France up to and including the national team under 20. Then, unlike his world-famous father, he chose to switch to Algeria, the country where his grandparents were born.
Maatsen replaces Timber (on team photo)
There is the first team photo of the Dutch team, without Jurriën Timber. He won’t join the group until tomorrow. Ian Maatsen is his replacement in the team photo.
Maatsen and Lutsharel Geertruida, reserves for the World Cup, are still part of the match selection against Algeria. Geertruida is probably behind the camera.
Which Dutch player should we keep an eye on?
Crysencio Summerville goes normally make his debut. So I’m curious to see what first impression he leaves behind. At West Ham United he usually plays left winger. “But I can also play well on the right. I am two-legged and at West Ham I also switch flanks in parts of matches,” he said this week during an introduction in Zeist.
When Summerville plays together with Memphis Depay, it is in his first international match for one, while the other already has 108 on the counter.
What does our expert expect?
I expect a typical practice match, with both sides playing time for almost all selection players. Ronald Koeman could easily make 11 substitutions, which is allowed nowadays, if both countries agree in advance.
It means that the Dutch team will have several players at the forefront. Perhaps Depay, Malen and Brobbey are all number 9 some of the time.
It is also interesting to follow how the teams deal with the new rules for the World Cup. Now that you have to throw in within five seconds, for example, the long throw in as a weapon no longer seems so useful.
