KZ fails to strike against PKC and returns home with defeat

In the Korfball League, Koog-Zaandijk did not manage to score points against PKC tonight. The formation of trainer Tim Bakker left Papendrecht with a defeat: 23-21.

In the first half, PKC and KZ barely avoided each other. At KZ, the women in particular were equally alert. Eight of the eleven Zaanse goals before half-time were scored by the four starting women of KZ: Zoë Engel, Nikki Boerhout, Anouk Haars and Esther Cordus.

PKC, the highest scoring team in the Korfball League, repeatedly attacked KZ’s defense. Tim Bakker’s team did not always shoot accurately, but nevertheless remained well in the wake of the home team. Halfway through the score was nicely balanced: 11-11.

PKC shows class

Also in the second half it was a long struggle to get the lead. At KZ the men were now also on the scoreboard more often. Marijn van den Goorbergh, Carlo de Vries and Darren Krook contributed to the Zaankanters’ score.

With the score at 17-17, the home team gave it some extra gas and created the first real hole in the match ten minutes before the end. PKC took a two-point lead and did not relinquish it in the end: 23-21.

Despite the defeat, KZ remains in third place in the Korfball League. The top four qualify for the play-offs. With four games to go, KZ has a lead of 6 points over number five Fortuna, which tonight defeated Groen Geel from Wormer by a wide margin (11-26).
