Shareholder Klaus-Michael Kühne favors Felix Magath’s employment at Hamburger SV. “Felix Magath has been my preferred candidate for years, but he couldn’t be placed with those responsible at HSV,” Kühne told the Sky TV channel on Wednesday. “If it were up to me, I would immediately hire Mr. Magath as a coach or sports director,” explained the investor.
HSV announced its separation from coach Tim Walter on Monday. Sports director Jonas Boldt appointed previous assistant Merlin Polzin as interim coach. The 33-year-old native of Hamburg also has the chance to become the main coach on a permanent basis, while HSV is looking for other candidates at the same time. Steffen Baumgart is still considered a candidate, but the North Germans are said to have not yet made contact with the 52-year-old.
The 70-year-old Magath won the European Cup with HSV as a player, among other things, and after retiring he worked as a manager, assistant coach and coach for Hamburg. As a trainer, Magath won the championship with VfL Wolfsburg in 2009 and previously with FC Bayern Munich in 2005 and 2006. Most recently, in 2021/22, the veteran kept Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga – through relegation against HSV.
Kühne, who holds 15.21 percent of the shares in HSV Fußball AG, continued: “Unfortunately, I am just an uninfluential fan who has to watch how HSV is unable to act in every respect.” Magath explained via Sky when asked about a possible commitment: “You should approach problems openly. So I’m not ruling anything out at the moment.”
